What it is

Category: Stimulant

  • Most legal party pills are made from various forms of the chemical class Piperazine
  • These chemicals were first synthesized for veterinary use for their antibiotic effects (for roundworm)
  • Party pills are often based on two ingredients, BZP (benzylpiperazine) and TFMPP (triflouro-methyl-phenylpiperazine), combined with other chemicals such as piper nigrum, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tyrosine
  • Party pills are designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine, MDMA and LSD, although without the addictive qualities and known negative health risks of illegal drugs. But they have been popularly described as producing noticeably different effects than these drugs.
  • Taken orally, a 150-500 mg dose of BZP has affects lasting 6-8 hours
  • TFMPP is rarely taken alone since its effects are unpleasurable; 30 to 100 mg are most often administered with BZP.
  • The capsules also include amino acids, vitamins, and capsuling agents
  • There are other types of legal party pills which don't include BZP or TFMPP, and claim to be safer because they are 100% natural which producers claim makes them safe to mix with alcohol. Among others, TNT is made with caffeine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, arginine, taurine, niacin, ginseng, etc.
What will likely happen

*Reactions and experiences may vary dramatically from person to person.*

Effects on brain:

Short term:

  • 1-Benzylpiperazine (BZP) has a peripheral sympatho-mimetic action and a complex central action, both directly and indirectly acting upon on all monoamines. These effects are studied very little, but seem to be somewhere in between those of MDMA and amphetamines
  • Pharmacologically, trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine behaves in a similar manner to phenethylamines (MDMA, MDE, 2-CB, etc.) - it combines with several receptors of the 5-HT-group (serotonin receptors)
Long term:
  • Because these substances are relatively new to recreational use, there is very little research into the long-term effects of BZP, TFMPP and other party pills.

Effects on body:

Short term:

  • Possible short term effects include dry mouth, dilated pupils, increased energy, loss of appetite, sleep deprivation, dehydration, nausea, convulsions and increased heart rate.
Long term:
  • Because these substances are relatively new to recreational use, there is very little research into the long-term effects of BZP, TFMPP and other party pills.
  • Renal toxicity, seizures and lack of energy have been linked to long term use of legal party pills.

Effects on behavior:

Short term:

  • Possible short term effects include euphoria, alertness, increased sociability, desire for love and touching, sexual arousal, moodiness, hallucinations, acute headaches, and muscle ache.
  • A hangover the next day is likely.
Long term:
  • Possible long term effects include acute psychosis.
Dependency

Addiction: There is no known risk of physical, but there is a risk of psychological addiction for BZP. There is also a risk of psychological addiction to herbal party pills.

Tolerance: Anecdotal evidence suggests tolerance to the central action of party pills will develop quickly

If you choose to use... Harm Reduction Tips

*Disclaimer! Nothing you do can make using party pills completely safe. All drug use has inherent risks and dangers. The suggestions in this section can only help you reduce some of the associated risks. The best way to avoid the harms related to drug use is to not take the drug at all.*

  • As the name suggests, legal party pills are currently not regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).
  • Keep in mind that just because they are legal, this does not automatically make them safe. Do not underestimate the strength and potency of any legal party pills!
  • Health Canada has issued an advisory against the use of Party Pills and has also put forward a motion to list many piperazines and their salts as illegal in Canada.
  • Taking more than suggested on the packages may lead to unpleasant feelings. Make sure to follow recommended dosages.
  • Drink a lot of water and eat fruit the next day.
  • Avoid mixing with other legal or illegal substances, as the combinations can be unpredictable.
  • Drug use affects the developing mind and body differently than developed ones. Waiting until your mind and body have more fully developed before using substances can have long term health and mental benefits.
